It’s so nice to be back in the saddle! This was my first ride of 2016, schooling a lovely little horse for a client.
I’m now taking on new clients for lessons and schooling, so get in touch to book and give a kick start to your leisure riding or competing this New Year.

Happy riding!
Popped up to Addington Manor yesterday to assist Fred Hodges BHSI, who was competing a client’s horse at BD Elementary.
Glad to be indoors as the rain hammered on the roof of the re-surfaced school at Chequers End this morning!
Luckily, the horses were brave and ignored the thunder and lightning!
I’m in the office today, preparing lecture handouts, determined to make rugs an interesting a topic as possible!
These are for my Level 1 BHS Horse Ownership Course, which is starting next month. The course covers aspects of basic stable management and horse care, and is suitable for first-time horse owners, riders keen to learn more about horse care, or parents of pony club children.
The course is run on an official BHS syllabus, and is part of a series of four levels. As you progress through the levels, you cover more wide ranging topics and more detailed knowledge is required. Each course results in a recognised qualification if students are successful in the optional exam.
Classes are small groups of no more than four, cost £20 and will run on Saturdays 10am to midday for eight weeks.
If you would like to find out more about what the course covers, or register to take part, please get in touch by 30th May, thanks!
This is my client Liz’s pony, Kazan, who doesn’t have the biggest stride (he’s only 14hh), and tends to move a little flat.
He’s a careful chap though, so I used poles to get him to pick his feet up, and improve the moment of suspension in the trot. In the photo you can see his improved knee action and him bending his hocks well.
To encourage him to lengthen his stride, I also set the distances slightly wider than I might normally do for him.
The result was great, even when I made it five poles in a row!
Exam day today for the level 2 Horse Ownership Course I’ve been running since the start of the year.
I really enjoy creating the exam papers for these courses from the syllabus that I’ve worked through with the students. I get to use the knowledge I gained completing my PGCE to devise different ways of testing students’ learning.
It is important to use a variety of questioning techniques, as candidates excel in a range of areas. Some may be good at writing essays, others may feel stronger when providing shorter answers.
Spent a lovely morning dressage judging for South Oxfordshire Riding Club today. I judged two classes for them, a preliminary and a novice. Congratulations to everyone who competed, it was great to see such a variety of horses, all doing their absolute best for their riders. I’m always impressed with the standard at SORC and today was no exception.
Just booked my place at the British Horse Society National Convention!
It promises to be an informative day of practical demos run by Tim Stockdale. I’ve seen him speak before, he’s funny and engaging as well as (obviously) hugely knowledgeable.
It’s on March 2nd at Hartpury College in Gloucestershire. Should be a great day, head to the BHS website to book online or give them a ring
I was delighted to be interviewed recently by Your Horse Magazine for their article on the secrets of happy hacking.
